SMEDAN Approves Free CAC Business Registration for Nigerian Entrepreneurs 2025

SMEDAN Approves Free CAC Business Registration for Nigerian Entrepreneurs 2025

Nigeria’s small business community is set to benefit from a new development as the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN) begins approving applications for free business name registration with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC). The initiative is aimed at helping micro, small, and medium enterprises move into the formal economy without the financial burden of registration fees.

The programme is designed to support entrepreneurs across the country by making business formalisation easier and more accessible. Many small businesses in Nigeria operate informally due to cost and limited awareness. By removing these barriers, SMEDAN is encouraging business owners to take an important step toward growth and stability.

The free CAC registration initiative allows eligible entrepreneurs to register their businesses at no cost. Registration fees that would normally be paid to the CAC are fully covered under the scheme. This gives small business owners the opportunity to obtain official business documents, which are often required to access financial services and business support programmes.

SMEDAN introduced this initiative to strengthen the MSME sector and improve economic participation. Formal registration helps businesses open corporate bank accounts, apply for grants and loans, and gain credibility with customers and partners. It also makes it easier for government agencies to provide targeted support to entrepreneurs.

The programme is open to micro, small, and medium enterprises, including sole proprietors, traders, artisans, startups, and early-stage businesses. Entrepreneurs who are already captured in SMEDAN’s database but do not yet have CAC registration are also eligible to benefit from the approval process.

Registering a business with the CAC comes with several long-term benefits. A registered business enjoys legal recognition, improved trust from customers, better access to funding opportunities, and the ability to participate in public and private sector programmes. It also positions the business for future expansion and partnerships.

Applications are reviewed by SMEDAN, and successful applicants are approved for free CAC registration. Approved business owners are guided through the registration process and informed of the next steps through official communication channels. Applicants are advised to regularly check their email and SMEDAN updates.

Interested entrepreneurs can apply through SMEDAN’s official online platforms or visit SMEDAN offices and business support centres in their respective states for assistance. This ensures that even business owners with limited digital access can participate in the programme.

This move is expected to have a positive impact on Nigeria’s economy by increasing the number of formally registered businesses. A stronger MSME sector supports job creation, improves data for economic planning, and promotes sustainable business growth across the country.

SMEDAN’s approval of free CAC business registration presents a valuable opportunity for Nigerian entrepreneurs to secure their business identity and build a foundation for long-term success. Business owners are encouraged to take advantage of the initiative while approvals are ongoing.
